The resident population of the city centre has grown dramatically over the last decade and now stands at around 36,000 people and climbing.
Liverpool was granted borough status in 1207, and the original seven streets of the settlement can now be found within the "commercial district" of Liverpool city centre.
The local authority is Liverpool City Council, the most populous local government district within the metropolitan county of Merseyside and the largest within the Liverpool City Region.
Liverpool is located on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, and historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the south west of the county of Lancashire. In 1889, it became a county borough independent of Lancashire.
As reflected in the name, the station originally broadcast on 1548 k Hz AM, then known as 194 metres medium wave, from a transmitter at Rainford.
The station was also given an FM frequency of 96.7 MHz, but did not begin broadcasting on FM until a few months later, after the transmitter was vandalised.
